#Friday Reflection

Those of us who are entrepreneurs, thought leaders and agents of change are always working. Our work wakes us up in the middle of the night and often robs us of much needed sleep. It is hard sometimes to carve out time to just “be” because “being” for us is being submerged in the waters of our passions.

Our causes and missions are what fuel us. For me, it is the very air that I breathe. Any issue that affects women is my issue. Anything that threatens the well being of my daughter as she forms into her woman is my threat. Anything that would hinder or stifle or oppress my black boy child are reasons to sharpen my sword.

So, with that being said, I have to carve out calculated rest and renewal and I must guard and protect my space from those who want to jump on my wagon because their wagon only has a half a wheel.

In this social media led world, people make calculated decisions about who they tweet and who they follow hoping to get a come up. But when we look at their tweets, and their interactions they do not reflect meaningful exchange or dialogue and not everything is for everybody. If a person has sent 10k tweets into the world and has not garnered substantial followers or even affirmation likes, something is wrong with that soul, message and method. They are wasting very precious time.

We must know our race and run our race. I am connected to a dude who does not have any social media presence. Zilt. But he owns very profitable businesses and packs out conference rooms when he speaks. His success is his advertisement. All he has to do is send out an email to his clients and customers and BAM! Standing room only!

His success did not come easy or overnight. It took years of being a good person, a responsible father and an ethical business man. It took years of honest dealings, fiscal responsibility and a clearly executed vision.

Likes and retweets are nice. Tweets and posts that causes someone to rethink a position or form a position is wonderful but what is really effective, what is really meaningful is the life we live away from the key board and what we stand for in our personal lives.

What is really effective is when I tell my daughter not to ever allow a man to abuse her and then she sees me living that out. What really matters is when I tell my son to be law abiding and then he sees me being respectful to law enforcement and being law abiding.

We cannot fake this. We can try but our hypocrisy always reveals itself. Some folks are tweeting the right thing but because they ain’t living the right thing, no one is listening.

Truth resonates with truth and bullshit sees bullshit and they both like, tweet and amen accordingly.
